Today, Senator Rick Scott announced the reintroduction of his Protect Our Seniors Act, aimed at preserving Social Security and Medicare. The legislation comes after four years of policies under the Biden-Harris administration, which Scott claims have pushed these programs closer to insolvency due to inflation.
Senator Scott emphasized his commitment as Florida’s U.S. Senator and Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging. "Preserving the benefits of Social Security and Medicare is one of my top priorities," he stated. He expressed concern over the impact of what he described as "Joe Biden’s reckless policies" on these essential programs. His proposed bill aims to establish rules preventing cuts to Medicare and Social Security while ensuring that savings within Medicare remain allocated to it.
Scott outlined his strategy for advancing the bill with support from colleagues on the committee and former President Trump. He stated, "Together with President Trump, we can bring our nation into its golden age for all Americans, including those enjoying their golden years of life."
The Protect Our Seniors Act includes provisions such as creating a Budget Point of Order requiring a two-thirds vote against any legislation that would reduce existing benefits, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). It also proposes amendments to CBO scoring laws so that savings in Medicare cannot fund unrelated spending.
Scott criticized past Democratic tactics where Medicare savings were used in bills like the infrastructure bill and Inflation Reduction Act for projects outside their intended scope.
