Ahead of the inauguration of Venezuela's President-elect Edmundo González, Senator Rick Scott has reintroduced a bill aimed at increasing the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Nicolás Maduro. The proposed legislation, known as the Securing Timely Opportunities for Payment and Maximizing Awards for Detaining Unlawful Regime Officials (STOP MADURO) Act, seeks to raise the maximum reward from $15 million to $100 million. This reward would be financed using assets seized from Maduro and his associates, rather than taxpayer money.

Senator Scott emphasized the Venezuelan people's desire for freedom and democracy, stating that they have clearly expressed their support for González as their rightful leader. He said, "The time of Maduro’s oppressive dictatorship is OVER," advocating for U.S. support against any illegitimate attempts by Maduro to maintain power.

Senator Ted Cruz also supported the initiative, labeling Maduro as a "corrupt dictator and thug." He stated that he was proud to cosponsor the effort and pledged continued collaboration with Congress on related issues.

Senator Bill Cassidy highlighted González's election as a contrast between representative democracy and dictatorship. He stressed that while only Venezuelans can reclaim their power, the U.S. should fully support them in this endeavor.

This legislative move comes in light of approximately $450 million in asset seizures linked to high-level officials within Maduro's regime, according to reports from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Florida.
