Senator Rick Scott visited Lithia, Florida, to receive a briefing on the recovery and response efforts following Hurricane Milton. He met with Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, County Administrator Bonnie Wise, Fire Chief Jason Dougherty, and other local officials. The senator has been in regular contact with federal and local leaders to ensure necessary resources are available for those affected by the storm.
Scott urged residents needing assistance from federal agencies like FEMA or the SBA to reach out to his office. Recently, he visited Punta Gorda and Fort Myers to assess damage and meet with local emergency officials.
"Tampa and surrounding communities, like Lithia, have been absolutely devastated by flooding as Alafia River continues to rise," said Senator Scott. He discussed recovery needs with President Biden and emphasized the importance of fully funding disaster recovery efforts through FEMA, SBA, HUD, and USDA. Scott also called for expedited damage assessments and reconvening the Senate for disaster relief legislation.
"As lifesaving work continues in Hillsborough County and across our state," Scott added, "the number one thing I want to reiterate today is that everyone must stay vigilant and stay safe."
Ahead of Hurricane Milton's landfall, Scott had daily communications with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) for updates. He traveled along Florida’s Gulf Coast for briefings from local law enforcement and emergency management officials. Additionally, he maintained contact with state leaders and energy companies regarding storm impacts.
Senators Scott and Marco Rubio wrote letters to President Biden supporting pre-landfall emergency declarations for Florida and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. These requests were approved by the president. They also urged federal agencies to address potential obstructions at Port Tampa Bay due to its significance in receiving petroleum products vital for Florida's economy.
Scott encourages Floridians seeking information or help with federal agencies post-Hurricane Milton or Helene to visit his website or check updates from the Florida Division of Emergency Management.
