Major Hurricane Milton is predicted to potentially disrupt the Port of Tampa Bay, a critical hub for over 40 percent of Florida's petroleum products. U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott have urged President Joe Biden to direct federal agencies to expedite preparations in response to this threat.
In their letter, the senators highlighted the potential long-term economic impacts if the port is obstructed. They stated, "With Hurricane Milton bearing down on Florida’s Gulf Coast, we request you direct federal agencies to expedite plans to respond to potential impediments or destruction of the Port of Tampa Bay and its associated federal channel."
The senators emphasized that disruptions at the port could hinder disaster recovery efforts and have lasting effects on Florida's economy. They noted that more than 40 percent of petroleum products consumed in Florida arrive through this port, which also plays a vital role in transporting construction materials needed for rebuilding after hurricanes.
Rubio and Scott outlined several actions they believe are necessary to mitigate these risks. These include ensuring U.S. Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers assets are ready to assess and clear sediment shoaling and debris from the federal channel post-storm. They also suggested mobilizing emergency dredging operations if required and facilitating interstate deliveries of fuel products through various transportation modes.
The senators concluded by urging preparation before landfall to aid recovery efforts should a worst-case scenario occur due to Hurricane Milton.
