U.S. Senator Marco Rubio has introduced the Fentanyl Reduction Engrained by Economic Deterrence Act, aimed at combating the trafficking of fentanyl into the United States. This legislation is a response to what Rubio describes as "the Biden-Harris Administration’s disastrous open-border policy," which he claims has facilitated the entry of fentanyl, making it one of the leading causes of death in America.
Rubio's bill targets foreign entities, particularly those in Mexico and China, that are involved in manufacturing fentanyl. "Ensuring an end to the production of fentanyl is crucial to protecting Americans and our interests," said Rubio. He emphasized that addressing the origins of the supply chain is vital and expressed hope for a future where America is free from the impact of fentanyl.
The proposed legislation would require the administration to compile a list of Chinese entities and officials involved in producing fentanyl precursors. Additionally, within 60 days of enactment, the administration would need to impose sanctions on these entities or provide justification for not doing so.
In related efforts, Rubio has previously urged Secretary Blinken to hold China accountable for its role in the fentanyl crisis. In February 2023, he called on President Biden to take more decisive action against this ongoing issue.
