Dr. Gulshan Abbas, the sister of international Uyghur advocate Rushan Abbas, remains detained in a Chinese prison.

U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Dick Durbin (D-IL), and colleagues released a joint statement ahead of the six-year anniversary of Dr. Gulshan Abbas’ imprisonment.

“Dr. Gulshan Abbas has suffered more than six years of cruel and unjust imprisonment at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party solely because of the tireless political advocacy led by her sister, who is a U.S. citizen. Leaders and human rights organizations worldwide have repeatedly called for her release. No human being should be jailed by a foreign government for the perceived crimes of a family member. We reaffirm the call for the immediate release of Dr. Abbas.”

Senators Chris Coons (D-DE), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Tim Kaine (D-VA), John Cornyn (R-TX), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Tim Scott (R-SC), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Jim Risch (R-ID), Rick Scott (R-FL), as well as Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), John Moolenaar (R-MI), Tom Suozzi (D-NY), Mike Waltz (R-FL), and Ro Khanna (D-CA) joined the statement.
