Senator Rick Scott has penned an op-ed for the Washington Examiner advocating for the passage of the SAVE Act, a bill he co-introduced with Senator Mike Lee. The legislation aims to safeguard the integrity of U.S. elections by ensuring that only U.S. citizens are eligible to vote in federal elections.
In his article, Senator Scott underscores the urgency of passing this legislation, citing concerns about illegal immigration and its potential impact on election integrity. He writes, “We have a wide open southern border, and every month, hundreds of thousands of people are breaking into our country illegally. No serious person disputes this."
Scott attributes the current state of affairs at the border to Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden, stating, “Our ‘border czar,’ Vice President Kamala Harris, and President Joe Biden have allowed this to happen. Again, this is indisputable.”
The senator further criticizes Democratic opposition to the SAVE Act: "In fact, the Democrats are actively opposing a bill that would prevent illegal immigrants from voting in U.S. elections." He emphasizes that the act clarifies that only U.S. citizens should be permitted to vote.
Outlining the specifics of the bill, Scott notes it mandates states to obtain documentary proof of citizenship when registering voters for federal elections and requires states to remove non-citizens from voter rolls using databases from the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration.
Scott also addresses political resistance within Congress: "This is a common-sense policy that protects our elections, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) refuses to let it pass." However, he acknowledges support from House Speaker Mike Johnson: "Thankfully, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) cares about the integrity of our elections."
Despite his general opposition to continuing resolutions as a method for government funding due to their temporary nature and lack of budget balance, Scott insists on including the SAVE Act in any such measure: "I refuse to cave to Schumer and the Washington establishment and have no intention of supporting any funding measure that doesn’t include the SAVE Act."
