Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio have issued a letter to President Joe Biden, urging the immediate approval of Florida's request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration for 61 counties. This action comes as Tropical Storm Debby is expected to bring severe weather and flooding across the state.

The letter, also supported by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, emphasizes the urgency of the situation. "We write in support of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration for 61 Florida counties due to Tropical Storm Debby," it states. The storm is anticipated to intensify, bringing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and life-threatening storm surges along portions of Florida’s west coast.

Highlighting the state's frequent encounters with severe weather, the senators stress the importance of federal resources in mitigating potential damage. "While Florida is no stranger to severe weather and storms, ensuring that the state has access to the federal resources it needs is imperative to protecting Floridians, property and our communities," they note.

The letter concludes with an appeal for prompt action from President Biden: "As such, we request that you promptly approve Governor DeSantis’ request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration."
