U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) questioned U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin about the Biden Administration's plans to protect U.S. troops from attacks by the Iranian regime and its proxies. During a hearing before the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Rubio expressed his concern about the lack of a credible deterrent against these attacks.

Rubio emphasized that the attacks, carried out by proxies of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and facilitated by Iran, have been escalating and spreading beyond Syria and Iraq. He warned that without a credible deterrent, these attacks would involve increasingly sophisticated and lethal weaponry, posing a significant threat to U.S. troops.

"I don’t want a broader war with Iran. I’m not one of those people that have out there been talking about airstrikes and starting a war with Iran," Rubio stated, acknowledging the delicate nature of the situation. However, he stressed the need for a credible deterrent to prevent further escalation.

In response, Secretary Austin acknowledged Rubio's concern and affirmed the Biden administration's commitment to protecting U.S. troops. He highlighted the actions taken to strengthen the U.S. presence in the region, such as deploying another carrier battle group to the Gulf region and increasing the number of aircraft.

Rubio acknowledged the presence of assets in the region but expressed his concern about Iran's perception of the U.S. willingness to take action. He emphasized that a credible deterrent relies not only on capability but also on the belief that the U.S. would follow through on its threats.

Secretary Austin agreed with Rubio's assessment, stating, "if they're not convinced that we will do what's necessary to protect our troops, then they will continue on as they are." He reassured Rubio that the Biden administration is committed to doing what is necessary to protect U.S. interests and troops.

Rubio concluded by underscoring the complexity of the situation and the importance of a credible deterrent. He emphasized that the lack of such a deterrent could lead to escalation and urged Secretary Austin to address the Iranian perception of U.S. willingness to take action.

The hearing highlighted the ongoing concerns about Iran's attacks on U.S. troops and the need for a credible deterrent. As tensions in the region continue to rise, it remains to be seen how the Biden administration will address this issue and ensure the safety of U.S. forces.
