Percentage of “A, B, and C” graded traditional schools increases to 93% in Duval

In spite of numerous challenges – including a global pandemic, an unprecedented national teacher shortage, and chronic student absenteeism – traditional Duval County Public Schools increased the percentage of its schools graded “A, B, or C” to 93%.

That is up from 88% in 2018-19, the year prior to the pandemic and the last year all schools received a school grade. All of this is according to data released Thursday by the Florida Department of Education.

Duval County has no traditional schools in the failing category, and the percentage of D schools declined by 5% from 17 schools in 2018-19 to 10 this school year.

“Our leadership at the school level, our teachers, our support staff, our district administrators, and our employees all came together for one goal: to ensure that our students are receiving a high-quality education,” said Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene. “Our school grades prove that is what we did. Even in the midst of the challenges we faced, we continued to show improvement.”

Greene said the grades reflect both the triumphs and difficulties of education in the pandemic era. There was a decline in the overall number of A and B schools, but there were also several schools that jumped ahead in letter grades.

This includes three schools that were under state monitoring and in danger of shifting to private management. The schools —Ramona Boulevard, Susie E. Tolbert, and George Washington Carver — all earned a C-grade, met their turnaround goals, and will remain as district-managed schools.

“This has truly been one of the highlights of what we accomplished this past school year,” said Greene emphasizing that this and other achievements would not be possible without the single-minded dedication of all members of Team Duval.

More highlights from the data include:

  • The district maintained its overall B grade.
  • West Riverside improved from a C in 2018-19 to an A in 2021-22.
  • Pinedale Elementary and Westview K-8 all improved from a D in 2018-19 to a B in 2021-22.
