Edward Waters College issued the following announcement on Oct. 16.
Edward Waters could not stop the vaunted Kentucky State rushing attack, ultimately falling 76-36 to the Thorobreds on Saturday afternoon at the Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium.
EWU (2-5) put up a season high 486 yards of total offense (200 rushing, 217 passing) and won the time of possession battle 30:22 to 29:38. Unfortunately, the Tigers could not get a handle on the Thorobreds (3-3) offense, surrendering 746 yards of total offense, with an astonishing 626 yards coming on the ground. Kentucky State scored touchdowns on every offensive posession they had in the game.
Despite the lopsided score, the Tigers did have some success offensively, led by reserve graduate transfer quarterback David Johnson. The Tennessee State transfer finished his afternoon going 14-20 passing for 214 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. Freshman Cedquan Smith started the contest before giving way to Johnson in the 2nd quarter, finishing 7-10 passing for 72 yards. Junior tailback De'Shaun Hugee finished with 76 yards on 10 carries, while freshman Devin Bailey had four carries for 74 yards rushing in the contest. Junior wide receiver Sam Thompson led EWU through the air with 43 yards on six receptions. Fellow junior Damaris August had his best performance for the Tigers this season with three receptions for 89 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Derrick Moore also had a solid game through the air with three receptions for 43 yards and his first receiving touchdown of the year.
Defensively, Ahmaud Jordan led the Tigers with 7.0 tackles and a forced fumble, while sophomore defensive end Ahmon Jefferson finished with 6.0 tackles on the afternoon.
Edward Waters will celebrate Homecoming 2021 next Saturday, October 23rd at 2:00pm as the Tigers will welcome the Marauders of Central State University to the First Coast. A limited amount of tickets are available now for purchase at EWCTigerPride.com/Tickets.
