City of Atlantic Beach issued the following announcement.
An entry by Atlantic Beach Youth Council member Ava Rathet was selected as a winner of the 2020 Florida League of Cities Youth Council Photography Competition.
The competition asks Florida’s municipal youth councils to showcase what they love about their city, town or village with a photo of their favorite aspects of it. The competition coincides with Florida City Government Week, an annual event taking place this week that encourages cities to celebrate, showcase and engage residents in the work of municipal government
Here's Ava's description of her photo: "Last Sunday my friend came over and we decided to go on a bike ride to the AB town center. As soon as we turned onto 20th street, the sky darkened, and tiny drops of clear water dampen my surroundings. We were already too far in our journey to turn around. We peddled fast but, thunder was rumbling, and lightning was striking all around. But, as quickly as the rain came, it stopped. While we were biking, I looked around and really appreciated the beauty of our town. The trees were glistening and green and the roads sparkled as the sunlight hit. I took a deep breath and really took in the beauty of my surrounds. The air was cool, and the sun warmed my face. As I looked around, I realized that maybe the rain was a good thing. It made me stop for a second to really get a look of how beautiful the nature of Atlantic Beach is."
The Atlantic Beach Youth Council is composed of high school students within the city. Other 2020 Youth Council Photography Competition winners are from Homestead, Satellite Beach, St. Petersburg and Wellington.
