The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR) is set to take place, honoring the millions of people worldwide who have lost their lives or suffered serious injuries in road traffic incidents. The event aims to recognize the ongoing impact on victims and their families, while also raising awareness about road safety.

In Jacksonville, 100 individuals have died in traffic crashes so far this year. Bike Walk Jax, a local advocacy group, will host the event to highlight how these fatalities have affected various communities in the city and to emphasize the public health challenges posed by road-related deaths.

“This event will also provide those working in road safety an opportunity to showcase current initiatives and efforts being made to address this important issue,” according to Bike Walk Jax.

The organization is seeking volunteers from the community to help with planning logistics, media outreach, stakeholder coordination, photography, graphic design, and promotion for WDoR. Community members interested in volunteering are encouraged to participate in a virtual planning meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 23rd from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

“As community residents, YOU are vital partners in improving the safety of our streets throughout Jacksonville. If you’re passionate about creating a SAFE, walkable, and bikeable community for all people, this is the place for you! BWJ is seeking volunteers to assist with planning logistics, media strategy, stakeholder coordination, photography, graphic design, and promotion for the WDoR.”

Those unable to volunteer are still invited to attend the event and show support for road safety efforts. For questions or further information about participation or volunteering opportunities, individuals can contact Lauren Rushing at lauren.rushing@jacksonvillebpac.com.
