Suicide remains a significant public health issue in the United States. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that more than 49,000 people died by suicide in 2023, which averages to one death every 11 minutes. Suicide is currently the eighth leading cause of death among individuals aged 35-64 and the second leading cause for those aged 10-24.

Recognizing warning signs is an important step in preventing suicide. These signs may differ based on age but often include increased use of alcohol or drugs, aggressive behavior, withdrawal from social circles, sudden mood changes, impulsive or reckless actions, giving away personal items, organizing personal affairs such as paying off debts or sorting paperwork, and saying goodbye to friends and family. For children, warning signs can include noticeable changes in usual behavior, difficulties at school, persistent thoughts about death, feelings of hopelessness, major mood shifts, or giving away belongings.

Individuals are encouraged to learn how they can help prevent suicide by identifying these warning signs and knowing how to respond:
• Ask directly if someone is thinking about self-harm.
• Remove potential means for self-harm such as weapons or medications.
• Offer support by being present and listening without judgment; avoid making promises that cannot be kept.
• Help connect them with resources like the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988 or visiting 988Lifeline.org.
If there is immediate danger, authorities advise calling 911.

A webinar focused on suicide prevention will take place on September 18 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Organizers say this event aims to provide a safe space for questions and discussions about supporting those who are struggling. Registration is open for anyone interested in learning more about reducing stigma around mental health issues and providing support.

“Together , we can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and provide support to those who need it most.”
