U.S. Congressmen John H. Rutherford and Mark Takano have announced the relaunch of the Congressional Deaf Caucus for the 119th Congress. Both representatives will serve as co-chairs of this bipartisan group, which aims to advocate for accessibility policies and strengthen ties between Congress members and their Deaf and hard of hearing constituents.
Rutherford highlighted the importance of awareness regarding the challenges faced by these communities, stating, "For more than a decade, the Congressional Deaf Caucus has focused on bringing awareness to the challenges faced by Deaf and hard of hearing Americans." He emphasized that individuals in these communities encounter unique obstacles in healthcare, education, and employment. Rutherford also mentioned his district's Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine as an example of how increased accessibility can positively impact lives.
Takano expressed pride in joining Rutherford to continue efforts towards progress for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals. "The Congressional Deaf Caucus has done incredible work over the past 10 years," he noted, mentioning achievements such as expanding internship programs and ensuring schools like California School for the Deaf Riverside have necessary resources.
To mark this relaunch, Rutherford and Takano plan to host a roundtable discussion with experts, community leaders, and members of the Deaf community. This event aims to foster collaboration between stakeholders and Congress while identifying areas that promote accessibility and opportunity for those who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
