Governor Ron DeSantis has sought an Expedited Major Disaster Declaration following the destructive impact of Hurricane Milton in Florida. The hurricane, which struck near Siesta Key as a Category 3 storm, resulted in at least 16 deaths and extensive damage to homes and businesses.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, U.S. Representative Vern Buchanan, and other members of the Florida delegation have written to President Joe Biden, urging swift approval of the declaration request. They stated: “Given the severity of the storm, as evidenced by the at least 16 reported deaths and still untold damages wrought by Hurricane Milton on peoples’ homes, businesses and livelihoods, we urge your immediate consideration of a Major Disaster Declaration…. The full support of the federal government is critical in helping save lives and getting our communities and constituents back on their feet.”
The letter highlights that Florida has been hit by three hurricanes recently, two being major ones. It mentions that Hurricane Milton affected areas already damaged by Hurricane Helene's storm surge two weeks prior. Additionally, tornadoes from Milton's outer bands caused further destruction across the state.
The delegation emphasized that federal assistance is essential for recovery efforts: “The full support of the federal government is critical in helping save lives and getting our communities and constituents back on their feet.”
They concluded with gratitude for President Biden’s consideration: "We thank you for your consideration of Governor DeSantis’ request and look forward to your expeditious response to this critically important issue."
