U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has urged Latin American leaders to support Israel at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. Rubio addressed letters to the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, and the President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, encouraging them to vote against a resolution proposed by the Palestinian Mission to the UN.
The resolution calls for several actions that Rubio described as antisemitic and harmful to Israel's sovereignty. It includes measures such as not recognizing Israel's presence in Palestinian areas, imposing sanctions on Israeli officials, halting arms transfers to Israel that could be used in these areas, and avoiding the establishment of diplomatic missions in Jerusalem.
Rubio stated: “The [Palestinian Authority’s] resolution…calls on countries to not legally recognize Israel’s presence in the Palestinian areas, enforce sanctions on Israeli officials, cease the transfer of arms to Israel that could be used in the Palestinian areas and to avoid establishing diplomatic missions in Jerusalem. These are severe demands that aim to destroy the independence of the Middle East’s only democracy. All democracies should oppose these adverse ambitions.”
