Wake Forest’s Cameron Hildreth scored a game-high 23 points on nine field goals to lead Wake Forest to their twelfth victory of the season in a 90-75 win over the Seminoles at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. Hildreth led four Demon Deacons in double figure scoring – Hildreth, Damari Monsanto (22 points), Andrew Carr (22 points), and Tyree Appleby (16 points) to improve Wake Forest’s ACC record to 4-2. Florida State is now 3-3 in ACC play.
Matthew Cleveland scored 19 points and 12 rebounds to earn his sixth consecutive double double, a Seminole milestone that was last achieved by Greg Grady during the 1974-75 season. Cleveland made Florida State Men’s Basketball history by becoming the first Seminole to have a double double in four consecutive ACC games.
Caleb Mills passed the coveted 1,000-point mark in his collegiate career in Wednesday night’s game, scoring 19 points on of three 3-pointers, six field goals, and four for four free throws. Six of the 19 points were scored in less than a minute, allowing Florida State a 6-0 scoring run over the Demon Deacons in the closing minutes of the game.
Freshman Baba Miller made his long-awaited Seminole debut against the Deacons. He totaled four points and four rebounds in 17 minutes of playing time.
Cleveland and Mills led the Seminoles in scoring against Wake Forest, with Cleveland accumulating 10 points in the first half off five field goals and Mills dominating the second half with 16 points off five field goals and four free throws.
Cameron Corhen continued his free throw excellence as he shot a perfect two-for-two from the charity stripe in the first half against Virginia. Corhen has made ten of his last eleven free throw attempts (.909) since the second half of Florida State’s victory over USC Upstate on December 13, and carries a .816 free throw shooting percentage (40-49) for the season.
Darin Green Jr.’s addition of 12 points off five field goals and two three-pointers marked his 16th game making at least one 3-point field goal out of Florida State’s 17 games played. Jalen Warley set a new career high with seven assists.
Although the Seminoles started off strong against the Demon Deacons, securing a 19-13 lead with nine minutes remaining of the first half, Wake Forest went on a 20-6 scoring run over seven minutes to turn the score around, 38-27.
The Seminoles entered intermission trailing 35-44.
Florida State heavily increased their shooting percentage in the second half, shooting 14 for 22 (.636) from the field and six for 11 (.545) from beyond the arc. Comparatively, the Seminoles had a .469 shooting percentage (15-32) from the field and shot two for 10 (.200) for three pointers in the first half.
The Seminoles scored 36 points in the paint and eight points from the bench. Off of their opponent’s 12 turnovers, the Seminoles scored 13 points and had 12 fastbreak points.
Florida State returns home to the Donald L. Tucker Center to face off against No. 13 Virginia on Saturday, January 14th with tip off at 4pm. The game will be televised on ESPN2. The Seminoles hold a 28-27 winning record over the Cavaliers.
