Edward Waters College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
In a matchup between two former Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals, Edward Waters met the Lady Panthers of Claflin University in a women's basketball contest, Monday evening at Tullis Gymnasium. The Lady Tigers were sluggish out of the gate, ultimately costing them an 81-69 decision, dropping their second consecutive contest.
EWU (5-2) were on the opposite end of a 9-0 run from Claflin (4-3) over the first 7:51 of the first quarter. The Lady Tigers did not crack the scoreboard until the 7:21 mark on a La'Quanza Glover jumper to make it a 9-2 score. Edward Waters could only muster up five more points the entire quarter and were down 20-7 after the end of the first.
The Purple & Orange cut the lead down to single digits on a Kristian Jewsome jumper with :41 remaining in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Panthers 19-17 in the quarter. Edward Waters ultimately went down 37-36 at halftime.
EWU pulled to within six at the 5:22 mark of the third quarter after Teiyahna Hutchinson's free throw trip, making the score 43-37. Claflin fired back with a run to extend their advantage back to double digits, leading 58-46 through three quarters of play.
Another big Lady Panther run pushed their advantage to as much as 19 points in the fourth quarter, and were ultimately able to take the 12 point home victory over EWU.
The Lady Tigers struggled hanging on to the basketball, posting a season high 31 turnovers. Claflin took advantage of that and scored 30 of their points off of those miscues. Claflin also had a 42-33 edge in rebounding and outshot EWU 49% to 34%. The EWU bench was also outscored 39-10 by the Claflin reserves.
Teiyahna Hutchinson led all scorers with 27 points on 8-of-22 shooting. La'Quanza Glover picked up her 54th career double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
