Senator Rick Scott said on April 9 that the Artemis II mission demonstrates what NASA can achieve when it is focused on its main purpose and not influenced by political mandates. In an opinion piece published by Fox News, Scott called for Congress to pass his Dismantle DEI Act, which aims to make permanent former President Trump’s executive actions to end diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at the agency.
Scott wrote, “This week, Americans and people around the world have been awed and inspired by an incredible journey that began in my home state of Florida. As exciting as this mission is, it’s only the beginning of America’s new future on the final frontier… For decades, NASA struggled with inconsistent direction. After Barack Obama canceled the Constellation program, the agency drifted, and Florida’s Space Coast began to fall by the wayside… Then things got back on track during President Trump’s first term… …The Biden administration overloaded NASA with political mandates that had little to do with space exploration and everything to do with appeasing the radical left. Congress should…do everything within our power to make sure NASA’s space exploration mission cannot be hijacked by future Democrat administrations… As Artemis III approaches, the stakes could not be higher. The United States can lead a new Space Age or fall behind because of distractions and misplaced priorities…”
Scott champions fiscal responsibility as well as policies supporting families and small businesses according to his official website. He served in active duty in the U.S. Navy aboard USS Glover after high school according to his official website. He also earned a business degree from University of Missouri-Kansas City and a law degree from Southern Methodist University according to his official website.
Scott was elected as U.S. Senator representing Florida according to his official website, following two terms as governor where he focused on economic growth and job creation. He serves on several Senate committees including Armed Services; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; Budget; and Special Committee on Aging according to his official website.
He co-founded Columbia Hospital Corporation with his wife Ann—his high school sweetheart—and together they raised two daughters according to his official website. The corporation grew into a leading health care provider under their leadership.
As attention turns toward Artemis III, Scott said maintaining focus at NASA will be critical for America’s continued leadership in space.
