Senator Rick Scott led a field hearing for the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, focusing on the issue of scams and financial fraud targeting older Americans. The hearing, titled “Protecting Florida’s Seniors: Fighting Fraud and Financial Exploitation,” addressed the increasing risks that scams present to seniors.
The committee recently released its 2025 Fraud Report, which documents a significant rise in sophisticated scams, especially those using artificial intelligence to deceive victims. According to the report, seniors lost more than $4.8 billion to frauds and scams in 2024. Additionally, individuals aged 50-59 experienced losses totaling $2.5 billion.
In response to these trends, Senator Scott has introduced two new legislative measures: the STOP Scammers Act and the GUARD Act. These bills are intended to strengthen protections for seniors against financial exploitation.
“Protecting Florida’s Seniors: Fighting Fraud and Financial Exploitation” was held as part of ongoing efforts by lawmakers to address vulnerabilities among aging populations and seek effective policy solutions.
