Rep. John Rutherford, who represents Florida’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of messages on social media marking local anniversaries and reflecting on national events.
On August 24, 2025, Rutherford celebrated a milestone for a prominent educational institution in his district, stating, “Happy 57th birthday to St. Augustine’s historic Flagler College. Since 1968, Flagler College has helped enrich the lives of its students, St. Augustine, and Northeast Florida as a whole. Here’s to many more!”
The following day, he acknowledged the National Park Service’s contributions with a post commemorating its anniversary: “For over 100 years, the @NatlParkService has connected Americans to the great outdoors while keeping our natural & historical landmarks beautiful for generations to come, including our very own @TimucuanNPS & Castillo de San Marcos. Happy National Park Service Founders Day!” This message highlighted notable sites within his constituency.
On August 26, Rutherford turned attention to recent history and military sacrifice: “Four years ago today, 13 servicemembers were killed in a suicide bombing at Abbey Gate during the Biden Admin’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. May we never forget their sacrifice. I am still committed to fighting for accountability & answers for their families.”
John Rutherford has represented Florida’s 5th District in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Ander Crenshaw. He previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1952 and currently residing in Jacksonville, Rutherford is an alumnus of Florida State University.
