Rep. John Rutherford, U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 5th district since 2017, has recently commented on key national and local issues in a series of social media posts.

On September 29, 2025, Rutherford addressed the looming government shutdown and criticized Democratic lawmakers, stating: “The Democrats supporting the Schumer Shutdown are playing a political game at the expense of the American taxpayer. Their last minute $1 TRILLION in requests are not reasonable. The government does not need to shutdown tomorrow night. House Republicans did our job passing a”.

A day later, on September 30, Rutherford expressed his support for actions taken by former President Trump and his administration regarding federal protections for religious institutions: “I’m grateful to see President Trump and his administration fully enforce the FACE Act to protect houses of worship and ensure equal justice under the law. The FACE Act was meant to be used to protect ALL Americans from the disturbing rise in violence and intimidation at houses of”.

Highlighting Florida’s history, Rutherford commemorated an important anniversary related to St. Augustine on October 2: “In 1672, Florida Gov. Manuel de Cendoya thrust a shovel into the ground to begin the fortification of St. Augustine. Since then, the fort has served as a monument to Florida’s First Coast’s robust history and resiliency. Happy 353rd birthday to Castillo de San Marcos!”

John Rutherford has represented Florida’s 5th District in Congress since replacing Ander Crenshaw in 2017; he previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1952, Rutherford resides in Jacksonville and is an alumnus of Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science degree earned in 1974.
