World-renowned violinist and conductor Scott Yoo will perform with an extremely rare multi-million-dollar Stradivarius violin when he joins the University of North Florida’s resident chamber music group, the Lawson Ensemble, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Recital Hall, in the UNF Fine Arts Center, Building 45. This event is free and open to the public.

The Stradivarius was built by members of the Italian family Stradivari during the 17th and 18th centuries. They are considered some of the finest instruments ever made and are extremely valuable collector’s items. According to their reputation, the quality of their sound has no equal.

The group will perform the Mendelssohn Octet and Yoo will interact with the audience to present an in-depth personal musical experience. Alice Dade, fellow prestigious musician and Yoo’s wife, will also perform a Mozart flute quartet in D Major.

Joining Yoo and the Lawson Ensemble will be members of the Jacksonville Symphony as well as former Vanderbilt University cello professor Grace Bahng Gavin.

Yoo is the chief conductor and artistic director of the Mexico City Philharmonic and the music director of Festival Mozaic. He is the host and executive producer of the currently running PBS series “Now Hear This” presented by Great Performances. He is the conductor of the Colorado College Music Festival, and the founder of the Medellín Festicámara, a chamber music program that brings together world-class artists with underprivileged young musicians.
