Rep. John Rutherford, a current member of the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 5th district, has shared his views and legislative actions through a series of tweets. Rutherford, who succeeded Ander Crenshaw in 2017, also served in the Florida House of Representatives before his congressional tenure.
On June 17, 2025, Rep. Rutherford emphasized the necessity for law enforcement officers to have adequate resources to protect Americans and combat the distribution of fentanyl. He expressed his support by stating “It’s important we give our law enforcement officers the tools they need to protect Americans AND keep dangerous and deadly fentanyl off of our streets.” He further noted his recent vote in favor of the HALT Fentanyl Act to make permanent a temporary class-wide scheduling order.
On June 19, 2025, Rutherford commemorated Juneteenth by reflecting on its historical significance. In a tweet posted at 14:55 UTC, he wrote “On this day in 1865, enslaved Americans were informed of their freedom, fulfilling the promise made in President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.” He acknowledged those who fought for freedom and equal opportunity for all Americans.
Later that same day at 16:28 UTC, he reiterated his sentiments about Juneteenth with another post stating “Today, we remember and honor those who fought for freedom, liberty, & equal opportunity for all Americans.”
John Rutherford was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1952 and currently resides in Jacksonville. He graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1974.
