Jacksonville expands warming center access and offers free transportation during winter

The City of Jacksonville has announced expanded operations for its Warming Centers as winter approaches. In response to cold weather emergencies, the city will provide free transportation to these centers through the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA). Residents need only inform JTA drivers that they are heading to a Warming Center in order to receive complimentary service.

Warming Centers will operate from Monday through Saturday at selected city facilities. These include public libraries and community centers across various neighborhoods, which offer accessible and climate-controlled environments. During periods of extreme cold, an Overnight Warming Center will be available at the Legends Center located at 5130 Soutel Drive, offering residents a safe place after hours.

The city is urging all residents, particularly vulnerable populations such as seniors and those without reliable heating, to take necessary precautions during cold weather events and seek assistance if needed.

“Residents simply need to inform the driver that they are traveling to a Warming Center to receive complimentary service,” according to information provided by the City of Jacksonville.
