With the arrival of fall, health officials are reminding residents about steps to prevent the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone aged 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine each year. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against the flu and its complications.
The CDC notes that getting vaccinated can prevent illness, protect those at higher risk such as older adults and young children, reduce symptom severity if you do get sick, and lower the chances of being hospitalized due to severe cases.
Other preventive measures are also encouraged. Health experts advise washing hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoiding close contact with people who are ill, staying physically active, ensuring adequate sleep each night, not touching your face after contacting potentially contaminated surfaces, covering your nose and mouth when sneezing, regularly cleaning commonly touched surfaces like doorknobs and cell phones with disinfectant, and staying home if you feel unwell.
“By following these simple steps and getting vaccinated, you can reduce your risk of getting the flu
and help prevent the spread of the virus. Good news – you can visit your local Florida Blue Center
to get your flu shot,” the announcement stated.
Local centers such as Florida Blue offer flu vaccinations for community members seeking protection during flu season.
