U.S. Congressman Aaron Bean, who represents Florida’s 4th district, has announced that he will not accept his congressional salary during the ongoing government shutdown. In a letter sent to Chief Administrative Officer Catherine Szpindor, Bean requested that his pay be withheld until Congress funds the government.
“I cannot in good conscience receive compensation during the shutdown while our American service members, air traffic controllers, and homeland defenders go without pay, nor while Northeast Floridians endure a disruption to essential services from federal agencies. That’s why I am withholding my pay until Senate Democrats vote on the House bill to reopen our government,” Bean stated.
Bean began serving in Congress in 2023 after succeeding John Rutherford as representative for Florida’s 4th district. Before joining Congress, he served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008 and in the Florida Senate from 2012 to 2022. Born in Fernandina Beach, Florida in 1967, Bean is currently 56 years old and continues to reside there. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Jacksonville University in 1989.
The U.S. Constitution requires Members of Congress to be paid during a government shutdown under Article 1, Section 6, Clause 1.
