WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Rick Scott and a group of bipartisan lawmakers have introduced the Transpacific Allies Investing in Weapons to Advance National (TAIWAN) Security Act, aimed at enhancing U.S.-Taiwan defense cooperation to counter China’s military expansion in the region.
Senator Rick Scott emphasized the importance of supporting Taiwan, stating, “It is no secret that Communist China’s evil dictator, Xi Jinping, is planning to invade Taiwan and continue his attacks against democracy in a quest for world domination. The United States cannot sit back and let this happen... America stands strong with Taiwan and will not bow to the will of an evil communist regime.”
Senator Jacky Rosen, another lead sponsor of the bill, highlighted the need to bolster Taiwan’s military readiness amidst China’s increasing aggression, stating, “As China ramps up its military buildup and aggression towards Taiwan, we must not only ensure our strength, but also bolster the strength of our democratic ally, Taiwan.”
Other senators, including Tim Kaine and Joni Ernst, echoed the sentiment of strengthening defense ties with Taiwan to deter Chinese military aggression. Representative Steven Horsford emphasized the bill's role in enhancing supply chain security and resilience to maintain stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Representative Michelle Steel underscored the importance of showing commitment to allies like Taiwan in the face of global threats, stating, “It is more essential than ever that we show our steadfast commitment to our allies, including Taiwan...to stop the CCP’s advances and protect democracy.”
The bipartisan TAIWAN Security Act aims to deepen U.S.-Taiwan defense cooperation, promote supply chain security, and help alleviate Taiwan’s readiness challenges in the midst of escalating tensions with China.
